What causes high usage on electric bill with just an icebox,and appliances running?
We are buying a house.the former owner stated to me that the light bill was $500.00 to $600.00 dollars a month and they didn't use but the icebox and Appliances.the average light bill is about $100.00 to $150.00 a month. I asked an electrician and he said a bad meter cause high usage.Anyone else have any ideas?
I would definately have the meter checked with the home inspection!!! You could also blame part of it on the age of the appliances, if they are older, they will use more energy. The lights, not so much, but definately replace them with those spiral bulbs, it really does help!!! The hot water heater (if its electric) takes up a big portion of the bill, if that is old, or not in correct working order, it could be a problem. An older icechest will run you upwards of $25-50 a month, but thats only the tip of your iceberg there. Every family uses energy differently, but...geez!!! You should get a hold of your local energy provider and ask if they do "energy audits". Most states do them and they really tell you a lot about your house. Right now we have a rebate thing going on in Wisconsin where you can get one for only $25, they are normally like $250 or so. We had one done last Spring and we did a few simple things over the summer and have seen a moderate decrease in our energy bill over the Fall and Winter months. Again, DEFINATELY get that meter checked with the home inspection, but a few easy fixes might help more than you think! Its definately worth it!!!
